Zoology Department, IB-USP and Department of Biological Oceanography, IO-USP Zoology Department - established in 1934 as part of The Natural History Course of the University of São Paulo. Today, besides teaching for undergraduates of Biology and graduates of Zoology the research activities cover natural history, comparative morphology, systematics, evolution and conservation of invertebrates (Mollusca, Crustacea, Annelida, Arachnida and Insecta) and of all vertebrate animals living in fresh water, coastal marine areas, inland and caves mostly from South America.
Department of Biological Oceanography - The Oceanographic Institute (IO) was established in 1946 as a state research unit and about 25 years later became part of the University of São Paulo (USP). In addition to relevant educational programs, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, the institute has been actively involved in a variety of research projects of national and international scope. One of the major research objectives of IOUSP is the study of the marine ecosystem biodiversity and dynamics. The institute's mission is tightly linked to contemporary demands of the society towards a more sustainable use of marine resources. In that respect, the extensive and diversified Brazilian coastline (covering from ~5oN to 35oS) is a natural laboratory for the various institute projects. The Brazilian shelf harbors a wide number of marine species, living in a range of habitats such as large estuarine areas (e.g., the Amazon river mouth), unique coral reef ecosystems (Abrolhos, the reef 'singularity' of the South Atlantic), and heavily impacted bays surrounding large cities (like Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, etc.). Many of these contrasting ecosystems have been under investigation by the institute's staff in recent years.

Reference Center on Environmental Information - CRIA
CRIA (Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental) is a not-for-profit, non-government organization. Its aim is to contribute towards a more sustainable use of Brazil's biodiversity through the dissemination of high quality data and information. CRIA's staff is engaged in developing information systems and tools making them freely and openly accessible through the Internet.
