About OBIS USA:

OBIS-USA is a collaboration between the US government and many other institutions involved in producing data about marine biodiversity, particularly focusing on species location data and related information. OBIS-USA was established to serve the data management and dissemination needs of the Ocean Biogreographic Information System (OBIS) and the Marine Life theme of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). Within NBII, the Marine Life theme is a complement to the Fisheries and Acquatic Resources (FAR) theme, which focuses on freshwater resources. The collaboration provides access to existing authoritative data on marine biodiversity including: taxonomic data, data on species distributions, maps, images and other data that scientists and organizations are willing to contribute to the US Node.

Host Organization:

The Pacific Basin Information Node (PBIN)

PBIN was established in 2001 as a regional node of the US National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). Its responsibilities are to provide informatics support to biodiversity management, science and education in the US of the Pacific basin and to participate in the creation and operation of the national system. The node has over forty partners and the three main foci include the marine environment, forest birds and invasive species.

Partner Institutions:

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Node (FAR)

FAR was established in 2001 as a thematic node of the US National Biological Information Infrastructure. Its main goal is to aid conservation and restoration efforts, by coordinating comprehensive data and information on the various aspects of fish and aquatic resources biology and their habitat to an audience ranging from scientists and managers to environmentalists and the general public. The node will provide an integrated, comprehensive web-based resource that will: 1) serve and access fishery and aquatic databases, 2) link to fishery and aquatic resource information sites, and 3) act as a larger scale coordinating site for fisheries and aquatic resources standards.

The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII)

NBII is a broad, collaborative program to provide increased access to data and information on the biological resources of the United States. The NBII links diverse, high-quality biological databases, information products, and analytical tools maintained by partners and other contributors in government agencies, academic institutions, non-government organizations, and private industry. NBII partners and collaborators also work on new standards, tools, and technologies that make it easier to find, integrate, and apply biological resources information. Resource managers, scientists, educators, and the general public use the NBII to answer a wide range of questions related to the management, use, or conservation of this nation's biological resources.

US National Committee for OBIS

The Committee is a subcommittee of the U.S. National Committee of the Census of Marine Life, with ex-officio participation of experts in data management and communications from the U.S. perspective. The U.S. National Committee for the Census of Marine Life was established in 2002 in consultation with the National Academies of Science National Research Council, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the international Scientific Steering Committee for the Census of Marine Life, with the intent of guiding the development of a national program, taking into account national priorities.
