How to cite OBIS data

Notes to users
Name of RON: EurOBIS
Website: http://www.marbef.org/data/eurobis.php
Host Organization: Flanders Marine Institute, on behalf of the MarBEF network
Partner Institutions:
Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (MarBEF)
MarBEF, a network of excellence funded by the European Union and consisting of 91 European marine institutes, is a platform to integrate and disseminate knowledge and expertise on marine biodiversity, with links to researchers, industry, stakeholders and the general public. On the network description pages of the network's web site, you will find more detailed information of MarBEF.
Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ)
VLIZ acts as a co-ordinating and information platform for marine sciences in Flanders. VLIZ hosts the Flanders Marine Data and Information Centre, and deploys the vessel Zeeleeuw for oceanographic research. VLIZ is the data management and IT unit for MarBEF.
Funding Source: Resources tomake data available to EurOBIS are largely from the individual data providers. The EU, though the MarBEF network, has made some funding available to set up the MarBEF web site, and the EurOBIS node within it. Some of the MarBEF funding is also used to make existing data available in electronic format.
Mission and Objectives:The European Ocean Biogeographic Information System (EurOBIS) is a distributed system that allows you to search multiple datasets simultaneously for biogeographic information on marine organisms. EurOBIS has been developed within the MarBEF network and acts as the European node of OBIS. The ultimate goal of EurOBIS is to provide the end-user with a fully searchable biogeographic database, focused on three main parameters of a distribution record: taxonomy, temporal and geographical cover. Within EurOBIS the European Register for Marine Species (ERMS) functions as the taxonomic backbone and each species list from every incoming dataset will be matched with this register.
Datasets included:At the time of writing, data from 47 providers were accessible through the EurOBIS portal; many of these 47 are data compilations in their own right, and represent several different individual providers. A detailed list of the providers can be found on the EurOBIS Providers page on the MarBEF web site.
Spatial Coverage:45 degrees West to 70 degrees East, 35 degrees north to the North Pole
Temporal Coverage: 1758 to present
Taxonomic coverage: in principle all taxa; virtually none of our records at present are on microbes
